How can I get rid of these veins on my legs?
Today, because of modern technology spider veins can be treated through sclerotherapy and laser treatments. At Vein & Skin Care Institute, we treat spider veins with sclerotherapy before jumping right into laser treatments.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Most spider veins can be treated by means of sclerotherapy in which a tiny needle, the size of a hair, is used to inject a chemical irritant into the abnormal veins. Dr. Goldstein uses a syringe with a tiny needle to inject a small amount of sclerosing (hardening) solution directly into a vein, causing it to blanch or turn white. The solution then causes the vessel to become irritated and swell shut, prohibiting the blood from reentering the vein. When the needle is withdrawn, pressure is immediately applied to the area. The skin may be kneaded to help disperse the solution and reduce bruising. Each vein may require several injections and most disappear in two weeks to two months.
Does Sclerotherapy hurt?
Patients who have had sclerotherapy have reported little discomfort. Some experience a slight to moderate burning sensation immediately after the injection, but this disappears within a few seconds.
Are there any side effects to Sclerotherapy?
Most patients experience no adverse effects; however, some minor side effects have been reported. These include slight blistering, which occurs when small amounts of solution seep into surrounding areas. These spots usually resolve in time or respond to treatment with bleaching agents. Bruising around the treated area, which eventually disappears, can result if the veins are usually weak. Fair skinned people ten to bruise more than dark skinned people. Clots sometimes develop at the site of the injection. Although not a major cause for concern, it may be necessary to remove these clots within two weeks in order to allow the healing process to progress normally. A small percentage of patients develop a network of tiny, pink vessels that turn white when pressure is applied. This condition, referred to as "matte telangiectasias", usually disappears without treatment; however, injection treatment may be necessary in some cases. Occasionally, there are allergic reactions to the solution, which are treated immediately with antihistamines and other medications.
Can I return to normal daily activities after the procedure?
Yes, you can leave the office and live life in a normal fashion.
Can I use a laser to treat my spider veins?
At Vein & Skin Care Institute, we try to treat spider veins with sclerotherapy first, if they don't respond to that, we will try using the laser. Laser treatments for leg telangiectasias depend of the quantity, size, and depth of the veins. Most patients need between two and four 30-minute sessions. Sessions are usually spaced 8 - 12 weeks apart. The laser treatment itself feels like numerous small snaps with a rubber band. Many patients do not require anesthesia during the procedure. A prescription for a topical anesthesia will be provided for those patients who prefer to feel less pain.
